It’s Just a Tool

Did you ever wonder why brand of brush Rembrandt used?

Just the other day someone called to tell me they saw one of my prints. They wanted to tell me how great it was. Then the questions. “What camera did you shoot that with? What lenses do you have?

In photography we are all way to focused on the gear! I’ve been just as guilty of everyone else. We all want that next lens, the next bigger, better, faster, camera body.

But it is time to change the focus!

In a past blog post, I discussed that the best camera you can use is the one with you.

Regardless of the tool used, you can achieve incredible images.

Take a look at this video! Lee Morris produces unbelievable high fashion images from an iPhone!

We all need to remember that lenses, camera, and flashes are just tools. When building a house, carpenters use a variety of tools to get the job done.  You never wonder what the brand of the hammer was after the fact.  No, we just look at the quality of the construction.

Does which tool you use matter?

Of course! Use the right tool for the right job.

Different lenses, for example, can make certain shots easier. In low light situations I’d much rather have the 50mm f1.4 than a f5.6 lens. But still just a tool!

Let’s slow down the race to get better gear and focus on using these tools better!

Photography is an incredible hobby and profession. It provides endless ways for us to learn, grow, and challenge ourselves with new ideas and techniques. Photographers at every skill and experience level can continue to master the tools in their own toolbox.
